Message From The President by
Wayne Metcalfe
It is already July and the predictions of a hot dry summer did not materialize.
I'm surprised someone is not offering a set of pontoons and an outboard motor
bracket to attach to our Corvettes. But the rain has not dampened our spirits
when it comes to having fun.
We have had meetings, pig roast, car shows, and
picnics to keep us busy in June. At our last meeting we voted to give John
Croyle's Big Oak Ranch and
Magic Moments each $6,000.00 at our July meeting. Representatives from
each organization will be present to receive their checks. Our July meeting
will
be at The Neighborhood Sports Grill on Sunday July 11th at 2:00 PM.
I received
reports that the Crapets did another outstanding job at their annual pig
roast and a good time was had by all that attended.
The Biloxi
show was a little bit of a disappointment as only three of our club's cars
were entered in the show. Jocko Lewis took four trophies, Best
Modified Car, First Place in his class, and a special sponsor trophy presented
by General Motors. Rick Stacy took Second Place in his class and I took
a Forth in mine. We did have a good time. There were 171 cars registered
at
the Biloxi show - maybe we can have that many at our next Champagne Show
of the South. Biloxi presented a check to the National Corvette Museum
for $6,000 and a check to a children's relief fund for $800.
The Club picnic held
at the Crapet's lake home was enjoyed by everyone even with the rain showers.
There were hot dogs with all the trimmings, including
Dave's famous baked beans. We had a good turnout despite the wet weather.
Our thanks to Tony and Cathy for opening their doors to the Club.
The Neighborhoods
Sports Grills First Annual Open Show will be held on Sunday July 25th.
Registration will begin at 11:00 AM with awards being presented
at 5:00 PM. We will use a people's choice format for judging so we will
be able to enter our cars. The registration fee will be $15.00. Awards will
be given to the top twenty and a best of show. Our club will be handling
registration and counting the votes. In return the club will retain the
registration
fees and people's choice vote money for our club. Come on out and have
fun
July
17th is the date for Jocko's Cannonball/Road Rally to Lake Guntersville.
Although this is not a club-sanctioned event, it is one of the best events
of
the year. Contact Jocko or Jane for more information.
The Classic Glass Corvette
Club Super Vette Saturday 2004 show will be held on Saturday August 7th. A
registration form was sent to each of you in an earlier
e-mail. This is a fun show and I hope we will send a large number of cars to
this event as Classic Glass supports our show each year. Stephen Pope has volunteered
to be the Caravan Captain for this event. Information about a caravan to the
show will be sent out as soon as plans can be made.
I hope to see you at the July
Meeting.
WELCOME TO NEW MACC MEMBERS
by Marti Garrett
We have 3 new members. Please welcome:
- David Woods (Suzan Touchton's brother) has a 1986 black
coupe. We were glad to have David at our picnic and to get to meet him. Thanks
for coming!
- Soraya Nilipour is the owner of two
Corvettes, a 1988 white coupe and a 2001 red coupe. She has been gracious
enough to offer her store in Homewood for
the club to view the July 4th fireworks. Thanks a bunch!
- Lee and Sharon
Hardegree are the owners of a 1964 red convertible.
I would like to
ask all our new members to please try and come to our July meeting. We
have a lot of new members that we haven't met and
you really
need to get involved
in your club. You're missing out on a lot of fun things!!!! Remember “Save
The Wave”.
MINUTES OF THE JUNE 13th MACC
MEETING
by Suzan Touchton
The meeting was changed from Richard's to Jim & Nicks in Homewood and was
called to order at 2:00 PM by Wayne Metcalfe.
Jocko Lewis was given the last of
the checks from the car show to give to Jane. Wayne Metcalfe gave Rob Conrad
all documentation from the show on CDs.
Marti Garrett
introduced new members Chris and Rebecca Rodgers. Wayne Metcalfe presented
the Treasurer's report. Marti reported that we have picked
up 10 new members.
Jocko Lewis talked about his cannonball run to be held on Saturday
July 17th. He said reservations made at the host hotel would be discounted
$10.00 if made
by June 30th. Jocko also said this year's event was not a speed event. Instead
of the fastest time, the winner would be the time closest to his personal run
time. Awards will be presented for the top 3 places for men drivers and the
top 2 places for women drivers.
Fred Atkins gave a NCRS Report. July 25th through
July 29th, NCRS will be holding its 30-year anniversary celebration in Windsor
Canada. One of our members, Mary
Jo Morton will be there with her car to compete for the Bowtie award.
Wayne Metcalfe gave a Show report. Total cost of this year's show was $17,909.25.
Gross profit for this years show was $32,523.43. The net profit from this year's
show was $14,614.18; this includes the net profit made on this year's outdoor
show of $2,400.00.
The executive board made a recommendation that $12,000.00 be
split evenly between our two charities: The Big Oak Ranch and Magic Moments.
A motion was made on
the floor and passed. Wayne Metcalfe will contact representatives from both
organizations so they can be present at our July meeting to accept their checks.
Wayne Metcalfe
talked about a one-day open show to be held at the Neighborhood Sports Grill
on Sunday July 25th. The club will organize the show. In Return
the club will retain profits from the show for it's own use. The registration
for the open show will be $15.00 each. Awards will be done on the people's
choice format so club members can enter their cars.
Ronnie Jones suggested that the club
purchase pop-up tents for the club's events. He said the cost for the tents
are about $120.00 each. Jocko Lewis said club
tents could be stored in his out building. Ronnie is looking into the final
cost of tents and folding tables.
The Biloxi show will be on June 18th. To date only
3 club cars will be entered. A caravan will leave the BP on highway 119 at
8:30 AM on June 17th.
The Club Picnic
will be held on June 26th at Oak Mountain State Park. An e-mail will be sent
later to confirm the time.
Ronnie Jones said he had a lot of pictures and other club material of a historical
nature. Some of this material dates back to the 80s. We need a club historian.
UPCOMING SOCIAL EVENTS by Cathy Crapet
MACC's calendar has been full in the past few weeks, and it looks like it will
be the same way in July and August. We had about 35 members turn out on a rainy
day, June 26th, for the picnic at our lake home. Thanks to Arlene, who cooked
out in the rain, we had great grilled hot dogs and all the trimmings. It cleared
in the afternoon, so we were able to get out and have some fun.
The next event
will be the Cannonball Run on July 17th. Your reservations need to be made
at Covenant Cove on Guntersville Lake. If you have questions about
this, please contact Jane for more details. She is graciously planning this
event.
August 7th is the Classic Glass Car Show in Ackworth, Georgia. If you
plan to attend this event you will need to contact Wayne for details. We
usually have
a good showing from our club.
White Water Rafting will now be August 27th
- 29th. We will raft on the Ocoee River near Cleveland, Tennessee on Saturday.
I am planning for us to stay
in Chattanooga. I will be sending out special announcements in the very
near future
with complete details, so watch your e-mails.
Also mark your calendars for
Vettes for Pets on September 11th. Arlene is planning this again, and we
will be going back to the winery for grape
stomping
this
year. Also in September will be the East Tennessee Corvette Club Car
Show (Gatlinburg); it will be September 24th-26th.
I wish everyone a fun and
safe Fourth of July weekend.

Corvette Takes 1-2 GTS Class Victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans
LE MANS, France - The Corvette Racing team won a dramatic GTS class battle at
the 24 Hours of Le Mans on Sunday. The #64 Corvette C5-R of Oliver Gavin, Olivier
Beretta and Jan Magnussen took the GTS victory, finishing sixth overall, while
the #63 Corvette of Ron Fellows, Johnny O'Connell and Max Papis took second place
honors. "This is our greatest Le Mans victory," said Doug Fehan, program
manager for Corvette Racing. "Le Mans provides a global space where we can
show what teamwork can accomplish. We never worked harder before or during a
race, which makes the victory that much sweeter. "After 24 action-packed,
sleepless hours of racing, the Corvettes return to the top step of the podium
at Le Mans, taking a decisive victory from Ferrari. The win represents a remarkable
third victory in five years for Chevrolet at Le Mans. Both Corvette teams overcame
many obstacles during the 24 hours, from triple driver stints to numerous front
and rear fascia changes during the course of the accident-prone race. The Corvette
Racing team will return to the track on June 25th for Round 2 of the American
Le Mans Series at Mid-Ohio. For more information on the Corvette Racing Team

around the track in their own Corvette with Johnny O'Connell as the driver.
A special raffle will be held for two VIP tickets to Petit Le Mans on September
24th-25th, a “Track Days” ticket to Road Atlanta, a leather Corvette
jacket, and other exciting prizes. Registration for “Vettes 4 NCM” at
Road Atlanta is open now and all proceeds from the event will be donated to

GENERAL CLUB NEWS
The Neighborhood Grill’s First Annual Open Show by Wayne Metcalfe
The Neighborhood Grill will host its first annual open car, truck, and motorcycle
show on Sunday, July the 25th. Registration will be on site only and will begin
at 11:00 AM with awards at 5:00 PM. Judging will use the people's choice format,
so we can enter our cars in this event. Awards will be given to the top twenty
and a best of show.
The Grill will purchase the twenty trophies we had left
over from our open show
for $200.00 and have them “re-plaqued” and purchase a best of show
trophy. They will also provide door prizes and specials on food and beverages.
Our
club has been asked to handle registration at the show, park cars, and tabulate
the votes. In return the club will be able to keep the registration
money and
the money from the people's choice votes. The registration for the show will
be $15.00 each and people's choice votes can be $.50 each or three for a
dollar.
I see this as an opportunity for the club to make as much as a thousand
dollars to use in anyway the club sees fit.
I need the twenty left over trophies
from our open car show, the left over windshield placards, and volunteers
to run the show. I would think about
eight people can
handle it. We already have a registration form we can use.
Any volunteers?
